Cusco – Walking Around

We are extremely glad we chose to do this as our first stop on our winter travels. This place is at 11,400 ft! I could not imagine going from sea level to here. After all of our travel craziness, we had been up for about 24 hours with only a couple cat naps here and there. The first day we spent napping, sipping coca tea, and napping. We got up the next day recharged and ready to explore what we could within walking distance.

Our first discovery was this friendly guy outside of a restaurant. Ready for truco o tratos (trick or treats).

Halloween Goblin

Some of the streets here are crazy narrow. Cars drive down these. While pedestrians walk up them. And vice versa.

Crazy narrow streets

When we got to the bottom, we discovered some large cathedrals:

There’s also several ancient walls around the city. This one is really popular because it has the twelve angled stone, a serpent, and a puma. I haven’t had a chance to take a picture of the Puma, yet. I’ll add it here when I find it.

If you turn your head and squint there’s a serpent.

Twelve angled stone.

We also found a couple of open air markets where you can buy a plate of steak, rice, and potatoes for about $3-$7. We found a nice bakery nearby (chocolate Croisant for $0.50, yes, please). Our place is up several flights of stone stairs so we walk down and take a taxi back to the bottom so we only have to walk about 30 steps up instead of 700. Well worth a couple bucks after hiking around for a few hours.

Up next . . . museums and Day of the Dead.
